The imo has despatched an expert to assist in the salvage operations of the capsized ro-pax Princess of the Stars amid litigation over the presence of toxic materials on board. Dutch expert Paul Glerum has been appointed following a request from the Philippine authorities. Almost all the 861 passengers and crew lost their lives when the vessel ran aground and turned over on 21 June en route to Cebu from Manila. The Dutch government is providing financial support for the deployment. The decision to designate a salvage expert was prompted by the discovery inside the vessel of hazardous materials, in particular a 40ft container containing 10 tonnes of endosulfan, a toxic pestidde. The Philippines government had sent out a request to IMO to "urgently" mobilise a salvage expert to assist and guide authorities in dealing with the complex salvage process due to the number of human casualties and the hazardous materials on board.
