It doesn't get more ironic than this: the US Coast Guard, which aggressively polices oily water separator laws, was itself caught bypassing an oily water separator in environmentally sensitive Honolulu Harbour. After ex-USCG chief warrant officer David Williams pleaded guilty in May to lying to investigators, the Department of Justice (DOJ) quickly boasted that it would "enforce environmental laws in an even-handed manner". Not everyone believed that - and last week's 'wrist slap' sentence for Williams did little to change opinions.
