The Italian Bourse in Milan has just announced the signing of two conventions, an early response by the country's financial sector to a call from Italian owners for better co-ordination between shipping and financial institutions. The first convention agreed by the bourse establishesa dedicated office in Italy offering advice to owners that are considering a public listing. This development comes after the recent merger between the Milan bourse and the London Stock Exchange. The focus of the second convention is an agreement with SACE,a company providing export credits to businesses in 155 countries. SACE will extend to shipowners the range of its services that had previously been reserved forthe shipbuilding industry. "The moment is propitious; today shipowners are sought by banks. The strong growth of world trade fuelled by emerging economies has contributed to dispel old prejudices [in Italy],"said an Italian ship finance source.
