Even as Singapore's shipyards boom, a series of accidents since June has cast a shadow on the otherwise clean safety record. Nine workers have died and 18 have been injured in accidents varying from falls in ship tanks to suffocation and electrocution. While the ministry of manpower has suspended work on those jobs, investigations into the causes are continuing. In a bid to stall the trend, government safety inspectors have fanned out to the 89 shipyards in Singapore to conduct spot checks. Yards have also implemented'time outs'from work to review safety procedures. DryDocks World in Tuas alone has witnessed three deaths.
