In April this year, Japanese operator MOL received an award from Fairplay's sister publication Safety at Sea International for its "effective and intensive investment in seafarer training" as well as impressive results in "fostering seamanship by giving training on cultural understanding" to cadets from around the world. The company's mid-term management plan, MOL Advance, includes ￥35Bn ($322M) earmarked for safety-related measures. "Prevention of accidents," MOL stated, "depends largely on the seamanship, knowledge, experience and judgement of seafarers who have to make on-the-spot decisions as potential risks arise." Therefore, it added, "we are making every endeavour to enhance our seafarer education and training system."
