Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in Ulsan was set up as a ship repair facility in 1975 but moved into newbuildings full time in 1996. All repair expertise was transferred to Hyundai Vinashin shipyard, which opened for business in 1999. The plan was to build up Vinashin for new-buildings, but it wasn't until August 2008 that the first blocks were cut for new vessels - significantly later than the planning allowed.rnHMD is one of the world's most productive newbuilding yards in its own right. Mipo specialises in medium-sized vessels, boxships of l,800-4,300teu, MR product tankers of 37,000-52,000dwt, and similar sized LPGs, PCTCs and container ro-ro ships. The yard is geared up for sub-Panamax tonnage, sales manager HK Choi told Fairplay. Moving ahead he believes there will be fewer container ship orders, but more dry bulk and product tankers.
