Three years ago, the Association of Ship Brokers & Agents in the US began to "certify" its members to ensure they followed accepted industry best practice and standards of operation. ASB A president Mike Ogle says that the certification seal now means "more business" for the group's members. "Some lines have a policy of only using ASB A-certified agents in the US," he told Fairplay. He noted that when ASB A first implemented certification, 10 agents were denied certifications because they "just didn't meet the standards."
