Everyone with an interest in ships and the sea has his or her own particular favourite vessels. In the case of Nick Tol-erton, a New Zealand newspaper sports editor and writer on rugby football and yachting, it's the refrigerated cargo ship. This came about after watching the Drag-or Maersk (1961) accelerating down Lyttelton harbour with elan on a sunny late autumn day in 1971. Pure reefers and fruit ships were infrequent visitors to NZ ports. The sky blue Moller hull was in less than pristine condition but the ship was a picture of purpose, gathering speed more like a sports car than a conventional cargo ship, in contrast to the big refrigerated cargo liners.
