The incredible ordering rates for tanker newbuildings witnessed by the market over the last five years appear to be slowing. Newbuilding demand is weakening due to turbulence in the global financial markets and the recent appreciation of the euro against the dollar, according to Herbert Aly, who sits on the management board of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems and is deputy chairman of the German Shipbuilding and Ocean Industries Association. The year 2006 was the bumper year for tanker contracting, with around 730 tankers above 25,000dwt ordered, compared to approximately 300 in 2005. As of mid-September 2008, some 290 tanker orders have been placed this year; 63% of the total number of orders placed in 2007 (see Figures 1 and 2).
