The forthcoming union of two of Japan's larger shipbuilding groups is described by Dave Iwamoto of IHI Marine United as a merger "of strategic opportunity, not of necessity". His company will join forces with Universal Shipbuilding next year to form what the Tokyo-based senior manager expects to be a "major, world-class" shipbuilder.rnAs general manager responsible for business planning, Iwamoto is deeply involved in future strategy. However, day-to-day discussion about integration of the two companies is delegated to a working group. "It is not simply a matter of getting bigger for the sake of size," Iwamoto told Fairplay. "We believe the immediate benefits art more likely to lie in stronger resources than in cost savings".
