While world leaders talked - and talked - about how to tackle piracy this past week, piracy activity continued to flourish.rnIn his opening remarks, IMO secretary general Efthimios Mitropoulos told delegates at the 85th meeting of the Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) that the scourge of piracy against ships must be stopped.rnHe earlier appealed to the secretary general of the United Nations to encourage the Security Council to extend the mandate under UN resolution 1816.rnThis was passed in June this year and gave nations the right to continue operations into territorial waters of countries in the Horn of Africa in pursuit of suspected pirates.rnAs Fairplay went to press, it appeared that the mandate wouldrnindeed be extended, authorising international shipping to protect merchant shipping.rnAll this is unlikely to console the families of hijacked crews, waiting for their loved ones to be freed. Dependent families, the unspoken victims of piracy, were immortalised in a statue - International Memorial to the Wife of the Seafarer - unveiled by Mitropoulos six weeks ago in Galaxidi, Greece.
