The first weapon in the fight against piracy is facts - good intelligence, hard evidence and clear thinking. Unfortunately, a fog of rumours has spread over the Gulf of Aden and Horn of Africa and now everybody is expecting to be boarded. Shipping needs to dispel these myths by tackling them head on. While we're at it, we must do the same about the markets. If the twin evils of piracy and recession have one thing in common, it's that important decisions have been taken while in possession of the minimum of intelligence. Companies looking to survive must take a long, cold look at the area of shipping in which they operate, and position themselves carefully. Survivors must gather as many facts as are pertinent to the decision-making process, and make sure they are in place to benefit from a future upturn.
