Caribbean and Central American trade bosses expect the global credit and economic downturn to strike their businesses full-force in 2009. The timing is terrible for major investments in the domestic port sector. Yet executives at last week's Caribbean-Central American Action (CCAA) conference argued that ports handling domestic cargo do not necessarily need more cranes -they need better practices. Indeed, a clever new productivity initiative by Caribbean carriers could serve as a model for other regions around the global, where domestic ports pose equally stubborn challenges.
