摘要

The president of Employment of the Filipino Association for Mariners' Employment, Marlon Rono, believes that several things can happen as a result of the economic crisis "which will impact on the Filipino seafarers." He cited loss of jobs once ships are laid up, crew salaries going down as charter and freight rates drop below the level where they can support high wages, and loss of principals who will look for cheaper alternative source of crews. The difficulty being experienced by the shipping industry in the credit market affects the demand for ships and consequently the demand for seafarers. The trade lull now pushes the owner or ship manager to screen their officers and ratings. Rono says seafarers who lack knowledge, skill or experience can use this time to improve their qualifications.
