Proven oil reserves in Saudi Arabia amount to 264Bn barrels, according to BP Statistical Review. Matthew Simmons, the Houston-based oil sceptic, has suggested recently that the 1977 figure of 100Bn is closer to the truth. But reserves in the US have now fallen below 30Bn. Until now, that is. Enter oil shale. The US government now estimates that within oil shale formations in the states of Wyoming, Utah and Colorado, there are recoverable reserves amounting to 800Bn barrels. This is probably four times the reserves of Saudi Arabia and only slightly less than the whole of OPEC combined.
