Hong Kong's days of double-digit growth in container volumes are long gone as the port struggles to remain competitive. Growlh slowed to 2.8% in 2006-recording the same percentage growth as the previous year (see table, p16). Kwai Tsing terminals, midstream operators and the river trade together handled 23.2M leu. But the volume is still huge, so even 2% growth meant that Hong Kong handled nearly 2M teu more than in 2005. The full impacl of regional competition is clear from the dramatic rise of 14% in volumes at rival Shenzhen in mainland China. In 2006 Shenzhen terminals handled ISM teu.
