Maritime colleges all stress the need for students to learn English, and China is no exception. The college syllabus of the navigation department of Shanghai Maritime University reveals that one-frith of the time spent by students majoring in navigation will be in learning the language. In fact, students spend more than half of their spare time learning to read and speak it.rnThis is because most of the students in this department come from China's vast rural hinterland, where there is little opportunity to leam any foreign language.
