A gap of $5bn is opening between actual bunker costs and fuel surcharges recovered on trans-Pacific box routes from February until August this year. Extra bunker costs have driven operators into taking action. Partners in the New World Alliance have announced an immediate 10% reduction in trans-Pacific box capacity for the coming winter, with a further 5-10% reduction likely next month.
