We need other companies to help pay the bill," declares Tatsuya Takaoki of Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding. He's referring to a major project underway right now in Japan to cash in on a massive, and until now, totally unexploited natural resource: natural gas hydrate (NGH) - all 400 trillion cubic feet of it. NGH is a mix of 80% ice and 20% natural gas (methane) that forms under low temperature and high pressure, typically found under deep-sea sediment. A Japanese research consortium is hoping for the creation a whole new gas-trade within about five years.
