Despite the long US boycott of Cuba, there is a European trade connection supported by the Fondel Finance, a Cuban-Dutch joint venture that provides shipping services to northwest Europe, the Baltic and the Mediterranean through its subsidiary NIRINT Shipping. NIRINT also offers feeder services between Jamaica and Cuba, and a fortnightly service to Halifax, Canada. More than 40,000 tonnes of nickel and cobalt a year are exported from Cuba to Europe, Asia and India.
