Political selfishness is stalling a planned Turkish Straits bypass. An oil pipeline is designed to take crude from the Black Sea to the Mediterranean, circumventing delays in the straits that can exceed a month in the winter - turning the northern Aegean Sea into a large anchorage from October to March. Even now, after the spring equinox, delays still total nine days. The same situation prevails in the southwestern Black Sea, with laden vessels waiting for a southbound transit window.
