The UK ports industry stands apart from most continental models of ownership because most trade passes through its privately owned ports. But UK ports will still be affected by UK government and European policies. In an exclusive interview with Fairplay, the UK's minister of state for transport, Stephen Ladyman, points out that lack of capacity is the main headache for UK port operators. The industry is meantime demanding government support for expansion but is also wary of too much interference into an essentially private sector.
