German Hull & Machinery insurers are getting increasingly worried about failure of crane wire ropes on board multi-purpose ships. They have issued a warning via their joint claims handling organisation VHT that class societies, shipowners and rope manufacturers must urgently develop more appropriate inspection standards. "Current procedures laid down in the German DIN norm 15020 are not adequate for certain products,"said Captain Peter Zahalka, managing director of VHT.
