The kremlin's challenge to the veracity of Royal Dutch Shell and ExxonMobil, operators of the Sakhalin offshore oil and gas fields, has drawn fierce counterattacks from Europe and the US. Criticism that the Kremlin ordered environmental checks on the projects to press the oil majors to cede control to Russia's Gazprom has come from Japan's incoming prime minister Shinzo Abe, EU energy chief Andris Piebalgs, the US State Department and investor-friendly media in London.
