The VLCC market in the Persian Gulf is easing back. Some commentators blame refinery cutbacks east of Suez for the easing as Fairplay goes to press, resulting from weaker margins. Other analysts think refinery maintenance periods, together with the Chinese Golden Week holidays, is producing the weaker market. For whatever reason, rates fell 10-15 points. Formosa Plastics reportedly fixed the 2005-built Otowasan for 260,000 tonnes from the PG to Taiwan at W115, down from W125-130 the previous week. This fixture was reported subsequently to have failed, so the owner had to be content with just W102.5; the account is Singapore Petroleum.
