Overthe past month or so, owners were firmly in control of the crude oil tanker market, and earnings on most size sectors moved strongly in their favour. Last week, however, owners relinquished their stranglehold as VLCC earnings fell. A bit like a falling chimney, slowly at first, then gathering pace, they ended up dropping by an average of one-third. We do not have to look very far to see the reason. Many refineries in South Korea and Japan have closed for routine maintenance, releasing relet tonnage onto the market. Many of these vessels are too small for voyages to the West and are thus queuing up for suitable employment to other eastern destinations.
