It's not often you see a couple of shipping bosses walking down the Thames towpath swigging cans of beer, but then Lord Jeffrey Sterling is hardly your average British peer of the realm. He recalls that the key decision for the consolidation of P&O and Nedlloyd was taken in July 1996 by Nedlloyd chairman Leo Berndsen and himself. "We were walking down the Thames towpath together having a couple of beers, and Leo and I decided that we were really going to go for it," he reminisces. The rest is history. He believes that the main driving forces for such moves are greed and fear - but the greater force is fear.
