Ship agents work long and unsociable hours for relatively low pay. That's part of the job, and most have come to accept the hardships involved. What is harder to accept is widespread ignorance - both within the maritime sector and among the politicians responsible for legislation - of what exactly ship agents do. This lack of awareness lies behind shipowners' reluctance to remunerate adequately for a job well done, the mistaken belief that agents control the ships they represent and the imposition of yet more requests for information. For this report. Fairplay contacted members of FON ASB A, the Federation of National Associations of Shipbrokers and Agents, to ask four specific questions (see below). Each of these questions, to which agents give their responses on pages 40-45, attempts to get to the heart of the real issues before today's ship agents; they cover recruitment, staff retention, legislators' lack of awareness, the burden of compliance and adequate remuneration.
