The new president of the Association of Singapore Marine Industries, Michael Chia, who is also executive director of rig builder Keppel FELS, concedes that some of the lower-value type of jobs currently carried out in Singapore, such as steelwork repairs, could move to lower-cost areas. These comprise mostly jobs where little technology, skills or project management are required. "Singapore, however, still has a few things going for it," he tells Fairplay, citing the marine cluster concept, which comprises a number of shipyards and marine support companies. "This is one of our strengths; it is not easy to duplicate a marine cluster," he noted.
