Sovcomflot is positioning itself as an energy transpor-tation player able to stand alongside other leaders in the oil and gas shipping sectors. The company has set its sights high: its vision is to be the shipping arm of the Russian energy industry, with growth based on an industrial approach providing for stable earnings, a balanced chartering profile, financial transparency, investment in LNG as one of the core activities, and continued build-up of its Suezmax, Aframax and MR tanker fleet. According to a presentation to Fairplay in Moscow last month, Sovcomflot's fleet of 47 modern vessels of 3.6Mdwt is underpinned by 17 newbuildings of 1.2Mdwt including 11 tankers, four LNG vessels and two LPG ships. At an average age of just five years, the company's existing ships compare well with the world tanker fleet average of 11.7 years.
