Is chaos ahead, or will there be a smooth transition in the container markets? After the resignation of P&O Nedlloyd from several shipping conferences and consortia last week, with notice periods of three and six months, the jury is out. Major shippers in several trades will be biting their nails about whether the service structure that will be offered post-PONL will be sufficient to meet their needs. This situation is most prominent in the Europe-Australia/NZ-Europe trades. PONL plays a dominant role in those routes, operating seven ships out of ten - five of its own vessels and two for German lines Hapag-Lloyd and Hamburg Sued - on the eastbound service.
