The us oil and shipping sectors' recovery from the waterworld nightmare caused by Hurricane Katrina is complicated by many factors, but some broad themes are emerging. The oil sector's overarching concern - beyond doing what it can to limit the horrifying human toll from the storm (see p6) - is how quickly the strained distribution system for refined products can be returned to 'normal'. The best metric of normality might be futures prices moving towards pre-storm levels.
