The face of the maritime industry along the Gulf Coast could be changed forever by Hurricane Katrina, which is being called the greatest natural disaster in US history. As Fairplay went to press, Mayor Ray Nagin of New Orleans feared 10,000 deaths in the city alone, let alone casualties in Gulfport and Biloxi, Mississippi, and other rural areas of the Gulf Coast. Damage estimates had climbed into 11 figures, while displaced people numbered in the millions. Several key ports remained closed after the howling winds and storm surges, some with no hope of reopening for months.
