A 15th century thatched cottage in England might seem an unlikely place to find an executive for a Japanese shipping company, but that's where Tom Boardley relaxes when he's not helping run NYK Line in Europe. The deputy MD has taken a rather convoluted route to the NYK job and that cottage near Saffron Walden, Essex, where he lives with his wife Alison and joins his son of 17 and a daughter of 13 in afternoon football kick-arounds. Boardley, a fresh-faced 48, has used a disarming smile to carry him through a 26-year career within P&O Group, initially with Overseas Containers (OCL). then P&O Containers, P&O Nedlloyd and, more recently, with P&O Ports. But last year, while working in Vancouver, he decided that remaining at P&O Ports no longer made sense. "I thought I ought to be looking for something else and therefore left P&O in August 2004." Boardley tells Fairplay.
