With floating abortion clinics facing legal snags, three Irish women are keeping the issue alive by taking the Irish government to the European Court of Human Rights over the country's abortion law. Abortion is illegal under Irish law unless the mother's life would be endangered without it. The women allege that, by restricting the procedure to extreme cases, as several other EU countries also do, Ireland violates their rights. The case is significant in the vacuum created by a court order in the Netherlands restricting ships run by Women on Waves from sailing freely to various European ports.
