India's ports and terminal sector has become an international magnet. In the decade since the sector was thrown open to private and foreign participation, India has drawn many global giants to its shores. DT Joseph, the secretary of shipping, says the old days of ships waiting for berths are over; now berths are awaiting ships. "But we need to keep up the pace of capacity addition. Since the economy is growing at a fast pace, existing capacities will soon fall short," he says. Industry analysts told Fairplay that the growth in foreign trade has clearly outpaced the expansion in port capacity. Some experts say that India may be heading towards a situation where the lack of port capacity could threaten the country's further foreign trade expansion. "No growing economy can afford to live with inadequate port infrastructure," says one analyst.
