Contrary to public perception, most of the world's internet and telephone traffic travels not by satellite but along undersea cable networks laid and maintained by specialised cable ships. True, for more than 150 years, the world has become ever-smaller because of constantly improving communication technology. But from the first telegram to broadband internet, the common link has always been the humble submarine cable.
