For the container sector, this year has been more a tale of success than stress, thanks to deft decisions by carriers, shippers and inter-modal providers that have streamlined their operations. In early October, the National Retail Federation's new Port Tracker survey rolled out the good news, predicting that there will be "no congestion, delays or diversions at any US gateway for the remainder of 2005". The month before, Port Tracker had raised red flags over the impact of the hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico, warning that coastal rail network disruptions could ripple through the national system. However since then officials have confirmed that national rail impacts were minimal.
