The made-for-TV thriller 'Oil Storm' depicts a hurricane that slams into the Gulf of Mexico coastline, crushing New Orleans, crippling the Port Fourchon energy hub, sulking offshore oil rigs and sending Americans' pump prices skyward. In a classic case of life imitating art, 'Oil Storm' premiered in June, a few months before Hurricanes Katrina and Rita transformed its fictitious plot scenario into the country's dominant reality. As the Department of Energy dramatically put it earlier this month: "With an unprecedented decline in crude oil inputs into refineries expected to continue through a significant portion of October ... oil product markets are clearly in uncharted waters."
