Downwards pressure continues on container ship charter rates after an accumulation of open vessels in the 1,000-1,700TEU sectors. According to Braemar Seascope: "The market has continued to fall this week across nearly all sectors - pressure remains high on mid-sized vessels, where the continued build-up of open tonnage over the coming weeks is still putting a strain on both period and rate levels." Recent fixtures include the 3,469TEU Conti Singa, an open-hatch box vessel that has been fixed to MISC for two years at $29,950 a day. Braemar suggests that the relatively short fixture period for a vessel of this size could reflect that the ship's open-hatch arrangement has yet to become widely accepted among liner operators.
