When looking at the steel industry, one cannot think only in terms of steel perse. The market and the trading patterns vary according to the type of product. First, there are hot-rolled and cold-rolled coils. Those pictured are used in a range of manufacturing processes requiring thin steel pressings or other largely flat articles. Steel panels for motor vehicles are a common use. More than 800M motor vehicles have been manufactured using the coils since the first one rolled out of the factory more than a century ago. This is expected at least to double by 2020, given the projected climb in demand for cars in China.
