A local saying goes: "Rotterdam earns money, and Amsterdam spends it." Amsterdam says things about Rotterdam, too, but nothing we can repeat. Yet today, with Amsterdam the financial heart of the Netherlands and itself a developing port, it is no longer entirely true. The ports' industrial and distribution sectors generate one-tenth of Dutch GDP. A CIA fact sheet states that this year GDP will be $498Bn in the Netherlands. The Economic Development Board of Rotterdam regards it as essential to strengthen the city's economy even more. EDBR chairman Steven van Eijck can be viewed as the link'to The Hague (the seat of Dutch government) becausi that's where he was previously a junior finance minister.
