Widely admired as one of the most effective and successful international set of agreements of its kind, the International Oil Pollution Compensation Funds have paid billions of dollars over the years in compensation to oil spill claimants worldwide. Keeping this giant regime on . track requires constant development. Starting next November, that task will fall to Willem Oosterveen, the lOPC's first new director in 20 years. Speaking to Fairplay after his election on 20 October, the Dutch senior legal adviser and part-time judge accepts that change is inevitable so the IOPC system will need to evolve.
