摘要

The United States has taken the heat out of a clash with Australia by rescinding a decision to suspend Australian monopoly wheat exporter AWB Ltd from a US-funded credit programme. The US Department of Agriculture agreed to hold off after Australia announced an inquiry into revelations by the USDA that more than $200M of AWB money was directed to the regime of Saddam Hussein. The US body alleged that payments were made by AWB through a Jordanian trucking firm when Australia was sending grain to Iraq under the UN Oil-For-Food programme. The inquiry, headed by former Australian judge Terence Cole, is due to report on the Iraqi scandal by the end of March 2006.
