Three years after Europe's worst oil spill, Spain will now fight alone its $1 Bn legal battle in New York against classification society American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) over the Prestige disaster. The Basque government has now formally withdrawn a bid to sue ABS for $50M after it sealed a political agreement with Madrid to retrieve ?51.1M ($60.1 M) spent in oil pollution clean-up costs and payments to the Basque fishing fleet as a result of the Prestige sinking.The deal was secured in a private meeting between parties on 29 September in Vitoria, the administrative capital of the Basque Autonomous Community (CAV) in northern Spain.
