The Price of second-hand vessels would be alarming to a person new to, and unaware of, the cyclical nature of the market. For example, take a modern double-hull VLCC that is five years old. In 2002, these vessels averaged about $54M to buy, having cost about $85M to build. By 2005, a sale price of about $113M could be expected. According to brokers, perceptions for future trading opportunities remain fairly optimistic. Both Vela, the shipowning arm of Saudi-Aramco, and Cosco are close to ordering 10 new VLCCs between them.
