A rout in the dry bulk market is not out of the question. The market has been led by developments in China and it still largely depends on that one country today. Sentiment plays a key role at such periods of freight highs, and sentiment is fickle - as markets find a tipping point in one direction so they can tip, equally dramatically, in the opposite direction. But, at such freight highs, even small percentage shifts belie dramatic changes in the actual freight numbers, leading to potentially substantial gains, or losses. The market is therefore taking a far greater interest in the resilience of individual players in the game should things go wrong. In many an owner's office the conversation is increasingly turning to charterparty risk and how to mitigate it, and as charterers come under scrutiny, so too a wary eye is being kept on exposure to counter parties in the paper trades.
