Orient Overseas Container Line's (OOCL) massive newbuilding programme of 12 ships of 8,063TEU and 26 ships of 5,800TEU capacity, which are to join the fleet by 2007, is necessary to meet rising demand for box tonnage, says group chairman and CEO Tung Chee Chen. Hong Kong-based OOCL took over its third 8,063TEU newbuilding delivery in the New Year and named the vessel OOCL Rotterdam at the Pasir Panjang terminal in Singapore on 26 January. The ship, and its sister vessels OOCL Shenzhen and OOCL Long Beach, are said to be the largest container ships in the world, according to Tung. The Orient Overseas (International) group is the parent of OOCL and is listed on the Hong Kong stock exchange.
