Marine equipment makers in a thriving domestic shipbuilding sector that is home to major international ship operators have the great advantage of customers aplenty. Norwegian companies were in that happy position for a long time. But as the sun sets on the country's shipbuilding sector and operators merge and consolidate, they have had to adjust business plans. As with just about everything in shipping at the moment, salvation for those most likely to survive lies in China. Norway's equipment makers are heading there in strength. But Norway's equipment sector is determined not to make the same mistakes that helped South Korea leap to shipbuilding prominence. The idea had been merely to supply equipment to the yards, and in the early days that was fine. But as Arne Borg - MD of Norac, the panel, door and wet unit specialists - told Fairplay, the Koreans pulled apart everything that was shipped over to discover how to put it all together and in no time had set up their own production facilities. The orders to Norway dried up. So with China, partnerships and own-factories are the order of the day. Norac set up its Chinese plant in 2002 in a joint venture with a local company that has a 30% share.
