Ask anyone managing Europe's top 10 or even top 20 container ports about hubs and he will undoubtedly call his facility a transhipment port. That is of course a simplification, for just four ports in the top 20 - Gioia Tauro, Algeciras, Marsaxlokk and Las Palmas - qualify as transhipment hubs, which depend totally or predominantly for their survival on a well-organised network of feeder operations. None has a substantial local catchment area of any significance, but each has the geographical advantage of being situated either at an inter-trade crossroads - Algeciras and Las Palmas - or in a virtual straight line between the Suez Canal and Gibraltar, from which feeders can easily cover many other markets while incurring minimum delay and cost to the mother ship.
